And this bump, I was working with another anthropologist, and we were trying to figure out what caused this large bump on the back of his skull.
And so we looked into, we had the skull x-rayed, and we looked into whether this was
a tumor, like what we call an osteoma, which could be cancerous, malignant that would spread, or it could be benign, just localized, or whether there was something else going on, an infection of some sort,
And what we did when we were looking at this is we noticed that in the x-ray, you couldn't see it without an x-ray, but in the x-ray, you could see a hairline fracture that started at the base of that bump and went up that bump.
and that this bump was actually reactive bone.
And so it goes to show us that sometimes when individuals get hit on the head, almost always you get an indentation, but sometimes you get the opposite.
You get this ossified nodule, almost like what you would expect in like a cartoon, right?
If you think about the old cartoons when you're a child, they knock the person on the head and then there goes the swelling.
Well, this is like one of those ossified swellings, probably started as a hematoma and then ossified.
And so it's interesting to see that.
It could be why the person died.
One of the interesting things is that there's a lot of trauma in this collection and a lot of evidence of interpersonal violence.
And so you see that...
you see individuals with arrowheads still embedded in the bone.
Right.
He likely didn't fall.
One individual had like literally an arrowhead in his skull.
And
When I first got to San Jose, they told me that all the research had suggested that this 2,000 year span was one population, one peoples.
And I thought then, why was there so much violence?
