So that would be like my bone biology section of research.
And then I have research that looked at big trends, trying to figure out.
what people, the culture was like, what people were doing in the culture.
But one of my favorite things was to look at specific individuals and figure out what's going on in this skeleton and what did that impact their lives.
And I'll tell you a couple of examples.
So one of the...
Sample that I would look that most of my career is called the Ryan's Mound and it's a pre-contact California site dating from about 3500 to right before contact so spans about 2,000 years and
pre-agriculture, so they were hunter-gatherers, but they were in California, which means that there was an abundance of resources, so they weren't doing a lot of movement.
They were very sedentary in a way and established a location.
But one of the interesting things is because of that, they had these mound burials where they just had added more and more individuals.
And so you get these time span of 2,000 years in one site.
And out of the 380 skeletons or whatever there were, there was one individual, for example, who was buried with thousands of little beads.
and many more beads, many more grave goods than anybody else at the site.
And then if you took a closer look, you noticed that his teeth were worn in a particular way, that maybe he was pulling leather or twine through his teeth, and he had really bad arthritis of the jaw.
which is not, they have a lot of arthritis in these collections, but not of the jaw.
And so it made me wonder, was this like someone who was highly revered as an artisan, and this was his occupation, so to speak, and then when he died, he was buried with all these grave goods to kind of honor that.
And so these kind of fascinating individuals are something that's
you know, bring me to focus to think, wow, these are not just, you know, like an average group that each person is individual to.
And another one that I looked at that was one of my last studies on this collection was
was a man who had a huge, almost like golf ball size bump on the back of his skull.
