I think it sounds very technical because it's got the word modern in there, but that was kind of brought in just to distinguish it from previous slavery that was state sanctioned and legalized. matched

So for almost a century now, they've had this outright ban on any goods produced using modern slavery. matched

And the US Trade Representative put it this way, saying the US has had a forced labour import ban for nearly a century, and it rigorously enforces it. matched

And importantly, Australia doesn't have an outright ban, which is where this whole tension comes from. matched

What we do have is what's called the Modern Slavery Act that came into force in 2018. matched
