The Homeric poems emerged from a period in archaic Greek history where, in some ways, the world was very different from our world.
But there were analogies.
It was a time of, in a way, proto-globalization of Greek speakers moving all across the Mediterranean world and of the pressures of new technologies.
And that combination of, it's globalization.
It's new tech.
What do we do with these new kinds of knowledge and new encounters between people who didn't know each other before?
all of the ancient epics, and I actually think Milton and the early modern epics as well, grapple with those questions about what is the whole world and how might the whole world be changing, both through human knowledge, is knowledge a good thing or a bad thing, and what does it mean to encounter the other, and do we see the other in ourselves?
