Going back to the question of what is prosocial versus antisocial, prosocial lies tend to be seen as more ethical and can even increase trust.

and reliance on other people and preferences for relationships, whereas antisocial lies almost always harm trust and are seen as unethical, right?

So if I'm going to harm you or I seem selfish, selfish lies are often antisocial.

If I help myself and harm you, the quintessential cheating, stealing, lying to cover my own transgressions, those are all very bad for moral judgment and interpersonal judgment like trust.

But the lies we tell to help others are seen very differently.

It's complicated.

Some of those are also resented like paternalistic lies, but some of them are seen as quite ethical.

Absolutely.

And Craig's example is a complicated one because...

It turned out well, but it's not obvious it would have, which is probably what contributes to some of the guilt.

But I think what else contributes to the guilt is the norm of truth-telling.

We learn very young you should always tell the truth.

We say out loud...

Honesty is always the best policy.

And we do carry around these implicit exceptions.

That is what my research unearths, but we rarely can say it out loud.
