We rarely explain it clearly to kids.
And so all we have in the front of our minds is that the truth is the gold standard.
And when we break it, we feel guilty.
I think this type of lie is common, and many people would also think it's more ethical and acceptable than lies that are self-serving, again, in the antisocial way.
Joanna's lie isn't harming another person.
It is protecting herself.
And in particular, it's really about privacy, which is a different type of lie.
It pertains to whether and who is
whether anyone and who is entitled to my information.
I get to make that decision.
My loved ones aren't entitled to my pain unless I make them, you know, entitled to that intimacy.
So those types of lies, they can reduce intimacy.
They can reduce trust and closeness, but a vulnerable person has the right to make that decision and that trade-off for themselves.
Sure.
There are some great studies done by Timothy Levine, not related to me, and others that look at this question.
And they find that actually some people lie very, very often, but most people don't lie that much at all.
So historically, we've kind of had the number in our head that people lie very,
Let's say in one in every five interactions, 20% of the time.
But that actually comes from a distribution where there are a few prolific liars and then a lot of people who don't actually lie very much at all.
