The other element of what you're saying, though, is about the sales element.

And some of my other work, I look at deception as associated with salesmanship and how it relates to different occupational stereotypes.

So in sales and marketing, sometimes people actually think deception is a competency.

It allows you to do your job well.

And that can be really problematic for kind of long-term sales.

But we do expect that when we're being sold.

And often people therefore discount some of the information or some of the approaches that are being used when they are being sold things.

Yeah, I think that is a difficult situation.

But in the long run, you actually can sell a lot and do really well without lying.

So aside from studying deception and honesty, I teach negotiations.

And that's also a key idea I try to communicate to students is that, yeah, deception can pay off in the short run a little bit some of the time if it's not discovered.

But to actually help people achieve their interests and

find joint gains and close sales that are going to get people to come back to you in the future, the truth is really beneficial.

Well, it's not obvious to me that the people saying them think they're lies.

I mean, the fact that this person is doing this 50 mile race at all,

it suggests he is strong, right?

If they're comparing him to themselves, I wouldn't be standing at all, so it looks pretty strong to me.

But that aside, I think if we accept that these are collective delusions, I think they really reveal something about the social motives we have beyond honesty, right?
