And you just want him to get comfortable at the major league level.
The two guys the Yankees still think very highly of, but Anthony Volpe is a numbers game now.
George Lombard Jr.
ready to go.
So Volpe's versatility hurt him here.
If he played second and he played third and he maybe played left and he played right like Caballero can, maybe he's still at the big league level.
He doesn't.
So when he goes down, they're going to try him out at some other positions, primarily moving over to second base a little bit in addition to the shortstop, and that could help Volpe long-term.
Still only 25 years old, as you referenced.
We've seen so much of him at the big league level, but so much of it at such a young age.
So the Yankees are hoping this can benefit Volpe in the long-term, takes his assignment, runs with it.
Maybe there's a future there at other positions outside of shortstop.
Maybe it could be shortstop again if there was an injury of some sort, but
I think the Yankees, when you zoom out for a moment at their big picture, they think George Lombard Jr.
is their future shortstop for three years to come.
So can they?
I think rehabilitate is a harsh word, but just recoup some of that value from Anthony Volpe at another position like a second base that could really benefit this team and Volpe over the long term.
And Dominguez, really interesting, didn't get as much talk because of the Volpe-Lombard situation.
But Dominguez was sent down, and Spencer Jones was kept up.
So a few weeks ago, that would not have been the case.
