It's not really... Ireland's curlew population have very, very short migrations in relation to curlew from other parts of the country.

Other parts of the continent, curlew are coming to Ireland.

from the ones we've already GPS tagged, birds that were released last year on Loch Carrib and Loch Ree, just hopped west and ended up in Galway or Shannon Estuary or there was ones in the Inish Keys, there was ones in Aran Island.

So they're only going a very, very short journey.

So we don't think the migration is any problem.

It's where did they go then to breed?

We looked at curlew at a national level and with the opinion of ornithologists and experts, I mean, we always...

do all these things collaboratively.

We're not just making decisions and running with them.

So it's looked at.

And we said that these birds, if we release birds on Lockery, well, if they go to a bog in the Midlands and start to breed, if they go to a wetland, you know, on the Corrib, it doesn't really matter where they go

We are only doing this emergency measure because we are happy, I suppose, that we're putting in place land management agreements, we're putting in place habitat restoration and we're putting in place professional and strategic and focused predation risk management in those areas.

So we're hoping, you know, putting birds back into an area that they're already failing and not addressing the reasons why they're failing.

Well, that's just an exercise in futility.

It's the whole package.

And this is one of the things that we need, that we're bolting on to that suite of measures that we're doing in relation to land management.

And that is basically just trying to get us another few chicks away.

I mean, this year we will head start and release close to 60 curlew.

And if we think about it, a declining curlew species is producing less than one fledgling for every two pairs.
