But it's land use.
Our land use has changed, fundamentally changed in Ireland.
What we do with land, how we do it, the speed at which we do it and how we interact with land.
And that goes from, I mean, we're certainly not, we work with hundreds of farmers at this stage and landowners.
and it's not just farming.
Actually, these birds need farming.
If you stop farming an area and it becomes scrubbed up or whatever, a lot of the ground nesting waders certainly don't use it.
They want to be in open landscapes.
That's achieved by grazing and mowing, but doing it in a way that suits these birds.
But our reforestation policies, our drainage of bogs, and our commercial peat exploitation, although it's finished now, it degraded a lot of our bogs.
And what we're noticing since
starting this project we knew it was a pressure but our recreational and our human disturbance type pressures are really really large as well.
A lot of people like to get out and about and this is what we need to do for mental health and a lot of other reasons we need to be in these places but we need to be mindful that there's birds on the ground trying to breed and it can be hard to watch sometimes you have these birds on eggs
They're sitting there through cold Aprils or real hard weather after getting nest sites or after laying eggs or incubating and then you get a good Maybank holiday and just everybody descends and there's dogs off leads and there's people camping in places and all these sort of things going on.
That is hard.
That's an educational piece.
We just need people to say,
Just be aware, because if we're asking a landowner to be aware that there's a bird on the ground and can you graze in a certain way or can you delay mowing?
Well, I mean, we all have to play our part.
We can't expect all this burden to be on landowners or on foresters or on, you know, anybody else.
