We all have to play our part because it is, it started that by a thousand cuts with our ground nesting birds, unfortunately.
We've seen it in the UK from their head-starting programmes that are going on a little bit longer than ours.
And we've seen it from results, albeit with smallish enough subsets,
that these birds can orientate themselves.
I'm not 100% sure in the wild whether it's exactly the male that brings chicks or whether these post-breeding flocks form and then they all go together.
But they certainly form post-breeding flocks.
Exactly the mechanism how birds get into a post-breeding flock is something that I'm a little bit unsure about.
But curlew, you can see curlew this time of the year.
They will be flying by and they will call.
And you will look up and you'll see a curlew and say, I wonder why that bird is calling.
Some of the reason being is that it may be calling because it wants to get into a post-breeding flock
And we understand that that may be problematic if we're releasing a very small cohort of birds.
So that's why we took the decision to release these birds in larger cohorts.
They're in bigger numbers, probably easier for an adult bird that's flying over looking for a post-breeding flock to come down when it sees eight or ten fledglings in an area.
It may be attracted, or likewise, once one of those fledglings
hones in on an adult bird or a couple of adult birds in a post-breeding flock, it may bring all them into it.
So this release in a cohort is something that we didn't just do willy-nilly.
And again, it gives greater assurance against predation.
Some of the research or some of the learnings from the UK show that at some stages they had released a smaller subset of birds in different places and they didn't do that well.
Their survivability was affected by it.
