It's one thing to say, well, the players shouldn't do that.
They should be sportsmen-like.
They should not break the rules in this wanton manner.
But they would be fools not to because they're not going to get punished for it and it actually makes your marking much more effective when you can just grab and pull a player down.
So the players, in a way, have no choice because of the culture that the referees have promoted of, oh, we're just going to kind of ignore most of the fouls.
No, I actually agree with most of what you're saying there, Rich, in terms of the Arteta substitutions in this game were mad.
I mean, he in a way is, you know, he really got away with one, I think, in terms of if Arsenal had dropped points, there would have been huge focus on the fact that he didn't really seem to know how he wanted to rearrange the team and made a couple of false moves and so on and so forth.
But again, we're in this situation where almost there's no choice.
There is a choice.
Just to go back to this point that we're arguing about, that it's the players and the managers who are creating this culture.
And you've pointed to the fact that referees are criticised no matter what they do.
They're damned if they do and damned if they don't.
And that is negative.
That is toxic.
So why doesn't the referee start giving penalties for these types of grappling offenses?
They're going to get criticized anyway.
But then if they're giving penalties for these things, then it suddenly becomes rational for the players to stop doing that.
Like, you're not going to have a well-coached side like Arsenal casually giving away penalties just because they can't resist grappling the run.
They're doing it because they know they will get away with it.
And if the referees were to prevent that, were to say, no, we're going to punish these from now on, sure, the refs would get criticised.
