Yeah.

So this is the world that we find the Mycenaeans involved in, and perhaps the Trojan War as well.

If it takes place in about the 13th century BC, we're going to have Troy, where it is now on the western coast of Anatolia.

It's on the periphery of both the Mycenaean world and the Hittite Empire.

It's what I call a contested periphery.

Yeah, absolutely.

That's a great way to put it.

Yes.

So I wouldn't be at all surprised if the story of the Trojan War, in actuality, if we were able to go back and look at it, if it weren't actually a war between the Mycenaeans and the Hittites, and it just happens to be held at Troy.

And Troy is kind of collateral damage, if you will.

So I think there's a bigger picture here.

And we actually do have evidence, textual evidence from the Hittites that the Mycenaeans were fighting on the western coast of Anatolia all the way back in the 15th century B.C.,

So one might think in terms of Iliad and the Odyssey, if the story of the Trojan War is not a telescoping of two or three hundred years of fighting in that region that Homer and the other epic poets managed to distill down into one epic tale.

So we've definitely got the Mycenaeans around and in a warlike posture, I would add, on that western coast.

And I think that's how they're interacting with the Hittites, because most of the

mentions of Akiyawa, as the Hittites called the Masonians, are in a militarized context.

Yeah, absolutely.

And in fact, if we look at the archaeology of Troy, we can see the Mycenaeans are happily trading with the Trojans before the so-called war breaks out.

We've got imported Mycenaean pottery in the earlier levels at Troy.

But we've also, again, have the Hittite records.
