They seem to have been left behind because they're in Akhenaten's capital city, which he built and only inhabited for 10, 20 years.
When Akhenaten died in about 1330 BC and King Tut moved the capital back down to Luxor and Karnak,
They left behind this archive.
The thinking is that what they left behind is the closed cases.
Oh, this is done.
We don't need it anymore.
And they only moved the correspondence that was still open, if you will.
So, no, they're not burnt or anything like that, which is really unusual.
But given the climate in Egypt, they're just preserved.
