or like the ability to just be like i know you have two and a half kilos less he's got that but so much more of what he does is the email he'll send to the athletes beforehand the words he'll say the the gauge he'll get from them in the meetings multiple meetings that he'll have with the personal coach and the athlete beforehand um to ensure that everyone's on the same page
and the way that he provides, um, respect to everyone involved and acknowledges our expertise while also putting forth a level of acknowledgement of his own expertise as a game day coach, not handler that was not assumed for the first 10 years of raw power lifting, I would say, or acknowledge to the degree it should be.
And I can say to your point, Ryan, that, um,
Game day coaching is also not like riding a bike.
Like I do and did in my peak of coaching, a whole lot of programming, nutrition, and the emotional intelligence of what true coaching is when you develop a relationship with someone you work with for years.
The times when I would get the opportunity in a high pressure meet where things are dictated by lot number chips from records and body weight advantage, as well as multiple attempts changes for a podium position.
at a high level meet or you know qualifying those would come probably one to two times a year and i couldn't always capitalize on it and i would feel out of my depth not because i didn't understand the theory or not because i didn't have the eye but because you have to do it under time pressure
remember it all while managing multiple relationships.
And I've only got like one or two lifters.
When you're a team coach, you've got the whole squad.
So to be able to manage all that simultaneously under pressure time and not make mistakes and have an overall trajectory of a career be positive is not something that should be minimized or diminished.
And I think this is an example of
what happens when you do that well over many, many years.
And I think we can see many examples of teams that have the talent to do as well as some of the really, really good teams in powerlifting, but just have these kind of spurts.
But if you look at teams that are pretty persistently at the top, you will find that they have people doing what Matt does, has taught, and has developed over the years.
So...
All credit where credit is due.
And I recognize this is not a game day coaching podcast.
But this is the story.
And he deserves his flowers.
