He said he didn't want to take a side.
The judge did not want to put his thumb on the scale, so he simply pulled the jury one by one, asked them if they could follow his instructions, reminded them of of the law, about reasonable doubt and what it means to find someone guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and then sent them back to deliberate.

The pathologist that the family hired to conduct this second autopsy on the body of Nolan Wells said the cause and manner of death are undetermined.
And in part, that reflects a reality.
The first autopsy had removed organs and dissected the body appropriately.
