And I just thought, well, why?
That's so strange.
It seems like they're causing all these problems.
Why are they the best practice?
Yet if you talk to people, they're like really the orthodoxy everyone knows is the best practices.
So here's one of my favorite stats that blew my mind in the book.
Since 2008.
Companies that have been given a rating of bad governance have outperformed those rated as having good governance in the stock market.
So it's not just my intuition or like, oh, these practices actually destroy value.
Okay, good to know.
Good to know.
Even though these practices, many of them are carried out in the name of shareholders and shareholder value, they are not actually in the material interests of the shareholders they purport to represent.
So that was a big one and a big surprise for me.
Another thing is I became a collector.
Over the years, because I built long-term stock exchange and other things.
So I became a collector of obscure corporate governance forms because there's all these alternative companies out there that are employee owned or they're customer co-ops or they're owned by a nonprofit foundation.
There are always alternative ways of structuring companies.
Even Alibaba is governed by an employee voting trust, which is like just a super interesting and unique governance model.
So I was like a collector.
I had a deck of cards actually I used to carry with me with all these different ideas on it.
