I took over my life, but also have been a founder, repeat founder myself and uh written a couple of books and working on a new book that uh I'm excited to talk about too.
I'm a computer programmer.
So I'm like a software guy from way back from when I was a kid, really, programming computers.
And I was in college during the dot com bubble.
That's how old I am.
So I got into entrepreneurship at a time when the best practice for entrepreneurship was nothing more sophisticated than like, have a great idea.
Question mark, question mark, question mark, make a lot of money.
We really didn't know anything about what we were doing.
There was no popular discourse about startups.
There wasn't a lot of online content about it.
Just it wasn't a thing yet.
And so we didn't know what we were doing.
And I came out to Silicon Valley after I graduated and wanted to really learn entrepreneurship from the very best of the best.
And I basically discovered that although there was an incredible apprenticeship system in Silicon Valley, that there was an incredible amount of accumulation.
Wisdom and lore about startups, it wasn't really systematic.
So when you would ask people for advice about what to do in a given situation, they would always be able to tell you, well, Steve Jobs did it like this, or Bill Gates did it like that, or your famous person.
This is how Mark Benioff famously faced that situation.
But I found that always very unsatisfying because I was like, well, what if I'm not Steve Jobs?
Then what?
What if what worked for him then?
