because if you'd lost that one then it was going to be an uphill battle because you guys will know when you play the South African side you give them any sniff or you let them get a bit of momentum and boy they're hard to pull back so we knew we had them the first one was at sea level, it was down in Cape Town if I remember correctly so we knew we had to win one of those ones because at the high felt it just got harder again but
Yeah, we were still hurting from the year before.
We knew we were a better team, just that, you know, circumstances conspired against us in that final.
But we knew we needed to right it wrong.
So we were definitely up for it.
Our test team was, they were hungry, man, as were the rest of us.
playing in that World Cup there was different because I think the South Africans supported New Zealand against everybody else.
You know, and especially down in Cape Town and Durban, there's a lot of coloured people down there and
You know, it seemed like we had half the stadium on our side when really they were neutral.
But, you know, like I said, they're huge fans of the All Blacks and I guess they wanted to beat us in the final.
But so they wanted us to get to the final.
Whereas in 96, they wanted you to lose every game.
They didn't care.
You know, they sent out the biggest, ugliest fellas they could find and tried to beat you up midweek so they'd soften you up for the weekend, you know.
And that's exactly what we used to do, the touring teams, when they came here.
The first game was always at Okara Park in Laughlin, mate.
They sent them up more for the Napuis to soften up for the rest of the season.
Every tool's got a tool, Cleon, and Os was it for us, you know.
He was just the life of the party.
He was the information committee, and I don't know why we did that, because he could only speak English.
