Clearly, you avoided obstacles.

You stopped at the red light.

You know, had some emergency happened, you would have snapped out of it and responded, right?

You were responsive to stuff going on in the road, right?

But did you actually, was it part of your stream of experience?

that road, visual experience of the road, you know, was, did you have a constant stream of visual experience of the road or did you have almost no experience of it or only just brief flashes of it, right?

And people have very different intuitions about that.

So that's the kind of sparse versus abundant, uh, debate, um, that you see in the philosophical literature and in the psychological literature.

And I think is very difficult to resolve, um,

If you want to, we can get into my attempts to resolve it and my failure to resolve it.

But the kind of relevant to the issue about neural correlates is this, right?

Assume that both a very sparse view and a very thin view are on the table.

On one view, you're going to have lots of things on the abundant view.

the kinds of neural states that are going to qualify as conscious are going to be much broader and much easier to attain than if consciousness is sparse.

Well, let's say that you have, say, visual processing in V1, but it doesn't get processed much forward from there back into the more cognitive central areas, and you're not attending.

is that on an abundant view, that might be enough for consciousness.

On a sparse view, that might not be enough.

That's really just a very vague and abstract way of putting it.

But on an abundant view, there are going to be many more brain states and cognitive states that are conscious than on a sparse view.
