The problem is then you're grading somebody 0 to 100. matched

It's either pass or fail. matched

And that's really difficult because most people aren't going to pass right away. matched

So what you see a lot of, and 12-step programs have saved my life, and I love the celebration of counting days, but what you see is a lot of people who can't get one year, two years, three years of continuous abstinence. matched

And so what ends up happening is those people feel like they're failing the whole time, when in reality, they might be very well moving closer every time. matched

And so I think sometimes we have to reframe the way we think about that. matched

I mean, part of my story is that eight years after the moment I'm talking about where I got sober, I went back out and I drank again and smoked pot for a few years. matched

I never went back to the heroin. matched

But when I came, that didn't work out because I had to get sober again. matched

So that tells you all you need to know about that experiment. matched

But when I came back, it was really difficult because I'd had eight years of matched

And I was so active, and I had sponsored so many people, and I was just well-known in the community. matched

And now I'm walking back in at zero. matched

And so my second time around, I really just tried not to pay attention to days. matched

Because up until eight years, I'd be like, well, it's not eight years. matched

That would just be supremely demotivating. matched

So I just kind of gave that up. matched

You know, I didn't go get one year coins or five year coins or the sort of things that people tend to do on their anniversary. matched
