Just because for me, it didn't make sense. matched

And now I've been back 18 years and I still just don't think about it that much in that way because I had to change my relationship to it for a period of time in order to get sober the second time. matched

This is a really deep question, so we'll go as deep as you want to go on this one, because I think about this a lot. matched

I do think it is analogous, right? matched

Because addiction to me is about lack of control, right? matched

That's the whole heart of the thing, is am I able... matched

to make a decision about how I want to interact with whatever this thing is, and am I then able to stay to that? matched

If I'm not able to do it, I just end up being that I am out of control with it, then in many ways, yes, it lends itself to a category that we call addiction. matched

Now, in the substance abuse world, that term is used less. matched

We talk about substance use disorder. matched

Because what we're saying is that there's a spectrum, and everybody's sitting at different places on the spectrum. matched

There's not a line at which you cross that line, and now we call you an addict. matched

I mean, there used to be, but even that was fuzzily defined. matched

There's the whole issue of being at the range of something like diabetes. matched

If you have blood sugar of one, one thing, you have diabetes. matched

If you have one point lower, you don't. matched

There's no real big difference between those two people, but we will treat them very differently based on that information. matched

So this spectrum idea is relevant everywhere. matched

What I don't know, and this is what I think about a lot, is calling all of these things an addiction, is it empowering to people? matched

And does it make them more able to change? matched
