Trials in humans then went forward in the early 1980s, and results were striking.

People with high cholesterol saw their LDL levels drop dramatically after taking the medication with few side effects.

But did this drop translate to protection from cardiovascular disease?

Right.

You betcha.

Yeah.

So there was one study sponsored by Merck, who was testing out their statin, found a 42% decrease in death rate in those taking a statin.

This is the second generation statin, Simvastatin.

Simvastatin.

We still use it today.
