But in the last few years, there have been well-documented cases of outbreaks associated with produce grown here in the U.S.,
Well, in Italy, ever since 2015, there were like 12% of environmental samples that were testing positive for cyclospora and prevalence in some studies in humans was up to 27%.
So it's certainly around.
We maybe just haven't been paying that much attention to it.
But
Cases in the U.S.
have certainly been on the rise since at least 2016.
So, despite the fact that FoodNet, we can just say, has crumbled at this point, cyclospora is still a nationally notifiable disease.
Which means that there is a system here in the U.S.
called the National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System.
It's like the longest acronym.
But...
It is still the case that when hospitals and clinics pick up on cyclospora, they have to report that to the CDC.
This is a passive surveillance system.
It's great that we have it.
It is not the same thing as actively looking for cases of foodborne illness the way that FoodNet did.
So even though FoodNet only covered, what did you say, 16% of the U.S.?
It was actively looking for and identifying, hey, these cases might actually represent a larger outbreak than what we're realizing.
And that is what we have lost here.
