So I was engaged with civil rights and the Vietnam War and um but then in graduate school actually what what really made a difference was a discussion with my best friend and I said, You don't really think that women are oppressed in the same way other people are oppressed?

And she said, Oh yes, I do and I was really quite taken aback by that.

But then in graduate school

bunch of other women who were all

In graduate school, we formed

The classic consciousness raising route.

And that's where I really discovered feminism.

As far as literature, well, the the main text that I found inspiring is the second sex.

And it was the work I

I just thought it was the most powerful and persuasive.

And uh I taught it for many, many years.

I started teaching feminism in uh nineteen seventy five, maybe seventy six, I think.

Um and uh it was uh one of uh just a handful of books, a handful of works you could teach at that time.

Uh it's amazing to think that there's hardly anything in throughout feminism all the time.

Hardly anything.

Sure.
