KAREN: THE RETRIAL
In Search of Reasonable Doubt: S1-E5
We are fighting a fight to help free someone that's innocent. Karen could be any single one of us. She's just a normal person. She's getting blamed for something she didn't do. She could be you. She could be her. She could be me. Karen Reid could be any one of us. The only difference is I wouldn't have the backing.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
In Search of Reasonable Doubt: S1-E5
I'd be in jail convicted and put away wrongfully if it was me because I wouldn't be able to afford this. And we are everyday people. Take the time to look into all the documents in court, all the motions, all the findings, all of that. And then you're going to come out of there going, what in the world is going on in Massachusetts, the birthplace of America? What is going on here?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
In Search of Reasonable Doubt: S1-E5
A woman's being railroaded and framed for a murder she didn't commit. And you can look at the evidence there. You have people here that are varying from school age children that are learning civics right now because of this, all the way up to people in their retirement right now. All walks of life. You have people that are probably waitresses, garbage collectors, PhD people. You got everybody.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
In Search of Reasonable Doubt: S1-E5
This is what America is. We're in Massachusetts, the foundation of America. This is everybody. We are here of our own free will, our own minds. We made our decisions by the receipts that Turtle Boy brought up. And that's why we're here. Let's get it factually straight. This is not a movement of we do not back the blue. We do not like police officers. Absolutely not.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
In Search of Reasonable Doubt: S1-E5
There's wonderful, good police officers out there. And then there's terrible ones. This isn't fixing a pocket ticket for Uncle Joe. This isn't, oh, aunt whatever drank a little bit too much, we're gonna drive her home, you know? This is a murdered police officer, and the facts of the case are showing that Karen Reid is getting railroaded in his murder.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
In Search of Reasonable Doubt: S1-E5
Then we get to the sally port, a sort of structure within the police station for driving vehicles into and then having it sort of secured in there. And the video there, they say, is on motion sensing, so there's gaps in it. There's places where the video just drops out.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
In Search of Reasonable Doubt: S1-E5
And further, the video appears to have been inverted, which makes the officers look like they're not getting near this taillight, which turns out not to be true.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL

So John O'Keefe is going to occupy a somewhat sainted position in this trial, and nobody lives up to the things that they will say about you after you've passed, typically. I'm sure that he probably had his wrinkles, but by all accounts, he seems to be a pretty good guy. And I'd say a very good guy. And so every...

bit where the jury might feel that she's wronged him in some fashion makes her look worse by comparison. The jury sometimes wants to hear from the accused just to hear them say, I didn't do it. We don't really get a whole lot of the defense saying who she is.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
In Search of Reasonable Doubt: S1-E5
What we heard a little bit was that she was lovey-dovey, sort of appeared to be getting along with John O'Keefe in the moments up to, and that she didn't appear drunk. That's really what the defense was able to sort of establish. And also that John O'Keefe's family thought she was a good influence.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
You testified regarding a number of injuries that you referred to as blunt impact injuries, correct?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
And to be clear, blunt impact injuries are a very, very large category that includes contusions, lacerations, abrasions, and fractures.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
And you've testified similarly that a blunt object can also refer to a large range of objects. Is that right?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
And I think yesterday you gave the example of a microphone being a blunt object.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
You'd agree that John O'Keefe had a number of blunt impact injuries on his face, on his head, and his right arm.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
Besides his right arm, which we'll discuss in a second, taking his body from the neck down, he did not have any significant injuries.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
Let's take those one at a time. No injury whatsoever to his shoulders.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
No injuries whatsoever to his chest area, aside from sort of the CPR related injuries that you discussed.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
From the neck down, he did not have a single broken bone, again, aside from those CPR-related injuries you discussed, correct?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
And you spoke earlier about how the bumper was a little higher than on, say, a regular sedan, correct?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
And so usually in a pedestrian collision, you would see injuries to the knees.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
Depending on the kind of car, depending on the speed, depending on the height of the individual and the car, you might see injuries to their lower extremity. Yeah.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
But in this case, you didn't see any injuries to his thighs, to his pelvis, anything even at the height of the bumper. Is that correct?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
Would you agree that John O'Keefe's injuries, or lack thereof, are inconsistent with having been struck by a vehicle at 24 miles per hour?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
I would say it's likely and unlikely at the same time, depending on the position of the body and the vehicle in question.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
Would you agree that John O'Keefe's injury to his arm are inconsistent with having been struck by a vehicle at 24 miles per hour?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
I don't know. I am not a reconstruction expert. I'm not a biomechanics expert. I never personally inspected the car, so I can't offer an opinion on that.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
I'd like to talk about the injuries to John O'Keefe's face. You testified that Mr. O'Keefe had a laceration on his right upper eyelid.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
Although these injuries may not have been the ultimate cause of his death, you'd agree that less severe injuries can still be very important in interpreting the manner or the context in which that person died, correct?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
And in furtherance of that, you've been taught that when doing an autopsy, details matter.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
And that's one of the reasons as a medical examiner, you have to notate every single injury you find on a person.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
And is that a photograph that was taken in connection with your autopsy?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
Yes, it was taken at the time of autopsy after the face was cleaned.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
Could you describe in that photograph what injuries you observed in space?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
The orbital ecchymosis on both eyes, the small laceration to the right eyelid, the abrasions on the nose.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
And you testified that the injuries to his face were also the result of a blunt force trauma?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
So that's the laceration to the eye and the two abrasions that we see there on his nose?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
And you agree that those injuries don't just manifest out of nowhere, right?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
Would you agree that his injuries to his face are consistent with having been punched?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
Your internal examination notes also cite a tongue laceration on the right front of the victim's tongue. Do you recall that?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
And you'd agree that a tongue laceration can be also caused by blunt force trauma?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
And that could also include something like a punch to the victim's face or jaw.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
In addition to the facial injuries, you described that Mr. O'Keefe had a significant laceration on the back of his head.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
Correct. We saw a photograph of that a little bit earlier. You testified that the skin around the laceration on the back of his head was also scratched.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
But you did not testify as to how you opined that might have happened.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
Would you agree that someone could certainly get scratched on the back of their head if they were, for instance, dragged on the ground?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
You described the open wound to the back of his head as a laceration, which is sort of a blunt force injury that's not the result of sharp force trauma. Is that right?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
And you'd agree that Mr. O'Keefe's head injury came from some sort of blow to the back of the head, whether it be an object or the ground. Is that right?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
And that injury can be the result of falling backward from a standing position onto concrete?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
It could also be the result of being struck with a large object such as a baseball bat or a barbell.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
The Alberts never had cars that were parked out front. It just stuck out as weird.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
Ford Edge is more round. The whole back facade is a little bit more round. A Jeep Cherokee, they're more square.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
I can see things that are light. I can see things that are dark. I can see true colors. I can't see shades of true colors.
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
Based on your extensive training and experience, what is your opinion regarding whether those injuries are consistent with an individual being struck by a vehicle?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
In your professional opinion, are those injuries consistent with an animal attack?
KAREN: THE RETRIAL
Impasse: S1-E8
I would say they are, yes. I'm not 100% sure. I didn't get a chance to analyze it right there on the spot, so to speak. But my basic impression is that these were consistent with marks caused by, say, a dog using his paws or claws, if you want to put it that way, and possibly the teeth as well.

I think that there are definitions for biological sex. So you're not answering that.

Oh, I'm simply saying that sex is different than gender. And I do believe that women's sports have a great value. I mean, Senator, I'll tell you right now. Ms.

I think that there are so many positive benefits to sports.

I'm saying that there's a difference between sex and gender and that the NCAA has rules in place, which they have for the last decade.
