I'd say it's pretty obvious in the episode by this point, but I think Shackleton working with Gorges is the most compelling theory.

If we set aside the cover-up for one minute, the two men had motive, they were both broke, they had means.

Shackleton lived with Vickers so he had access to the safe key.

And we also know a crime of this nature was certainly not beyond either man, given their later lives.

During Ireland's struggle for independence, Irish revolutionaries sought allies across the globe.

In this series Brothers in Pain, we have seen how they forged links with other anti colonial movements and also the nascent communist government in Moscow, which had come to power in late nineteen seventeen.

However, less well known were the attempts by Irish revolutionaries to seek allies in British colonies, not among the people resisting the Empire, but from colonial settlers, many of whom were of Irish extraction.

This would see them travel to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and perhaps most controversially, South Africa.
