Let's not forget also that in Syria for a very long time, there was a not very pleasant man called Assad who's no longer.

I'm not entirely in a position to say that Syria is in a better place now than it was, but certainly the alliances there have shifted.

So it's no longer Putin having his person here.

In Syria, it's more Trump now sort of being close to a former jihadist and lifting sanctions.

One could argue that perhaps for the Syrian people, that is a better outcome than what was there before.
