But that's what it felt like at the time.

And it was wrong.

Obviously, I was wrong.

And it was not the right decision and one that I regret.

Three weeks after the tour ended, I had my hip replaced.

I had broken my hip in 2003 while I was on the postal service team and it had deteriorated over time.

As part of that, I was prescribed Vicodin to deal with it.

It's going to sound bad to say, but that really helped having that.

I just had that and I drank way too much and I just checked out.

I couldn't face it.

I knew that I shouldn't be denying it and defending myself, but I wasn't willing to just give up on everything I had done in my life and just say, okay, well, that's it.

Once you understood the story and how ridiculous it was...

What was I going to do?

I was already the fall guy, right?

I'm just being crucified in the press.

And what am I going to do?

Turn on everyone else.

Then they're just going to say, oh, yeah, he's just saying that because he got caught.

I mean, there was no way out.

There just was no way out.
