So I loved his writings.

But at that time, he was, you know, on the FBI most wanted list.

And I kind of went, yeah, I get what he's doing.

And I'm drawn to that.

So it was really kind of wanting to fight and not to count the cost kind of thing.

Yeah, but you know that, you know, so you make the long retreat.

the spiritual exercises twice.

So I did it in the novitiate.

I was so young, but then when many years later I did it after 10 years ordination or so, and I was in Detroit and that changed my life.

I just, uh,

It really altered things because I had this palpable experience of I always knew that God was love and that God loved me and God loved us.

But I had a palpable experience that it was, in fact, God's joy to love me.

That was radically new.

And that's never left me.

But that came so much later in my life.

I had already been pastored.

and it was like 10 years after ordination.

But that's been something that has stayed

and has quickened me, as the mystics would say, and has kind of lodged itself in my heart forever.

But we're at different stages, you know, when we're young, when you enter the Jesuits, and then so whatever was your attraction to join may not well be the reason why you stay, but you grow and you evolve and things become more settled in your heart.
