Yeah, part of it was I was on the heels of having had this extraordinary experience as pastor of Dolores Mission and feeling so powerfully the love of the people with whom I was privileged to accompany.
So gang members and the women in the parish.
And so I carried that into the experience of the long retreat.
And then that became kind of...
how I had access to how God saw me.
it was a little bit like, you know, we would have these birthday parties when it was my birthday or one of the other Jesuits there.
And they would feign all this kind of, you know, hey, there's a special emergency meeting of the parish council in the hall.
And you would go in and the lights would go on and it was packed with people and the mariachis playing happy birthday.
And of course you knew,
that this was going to happen.
And I can remember a couple of years in going to my brother Jesuits and saying, hey, do we have to really do this, you know, do this whole surprise thing?
And I remember, I can't remember which Jesuits said this to me, but he was kind of stern.
And he says, don't think for a minute that this party is for you.
It's for the people.
And then he said, it is their joy to love you.
And that was kind of a passageway where I was able, upon reflecting when I was in Detroit, I thought, yeah, that's exactly how God is.
Then it's the God who can't take his eyes off of you.
It's the God who's too busy loving you to be disappointed.
You know, it's the God of love.
And my friend mirror by star says, once you know the God of love, you fire all the other gods.
