I mean, the literal tools of the trade, the materials you need to become an artist, but also, you know, to someone who's going to train you or encourage a talent.

So almost without exception, every woman who is a successful artist in this period comes from a family of artists.

I think that's, you know, probably especially important in France where, you know, by the time Vijay is growing up,

The Royal Academy is 100 years old.

It's very formal.

It's very set in its ways.

There's a very strict curriculum and process for becoming a professional artist.

So if you were born male, you might train in an academy school.

You might go to drawing sessions where you could copy from a male model.

Well, absolutely not.

If you're a woman, that's an avenue that is completely closed to you.

For all the young male artists, the great prize is the Prix de Rome, the Rome Prize, which every year sends the most talented students to the Academy's outpost in Rome, where suddenly the world of the classical past and the great masters of the Renaissance is all opened up to you.

You're paid to go and live and study and paint.

But again, I mean, it's an absolute non-starter if you're a woman.

You know, it's an impossible set of circumstances.

Equally, the great tragedy of her young life is that her father dies when she's still very young.

So she's 12 when he dies unexpectedly following a surgery.

And she has a complicated relationship with her mother.

But I think to her mother's great credit, the mother and then the network of artists, the family, friends who are around them recognize that they have to keep nurturing Vijay's talent.

So she is enrolled in quite a modest local drawing school run by the wife of a fan painter.
