Sometimes you spend too much time thinking about a story, just get pen to paper and crack on.
One of the best pieces of advice he gave, and it's just one thing that's stuck with me ever since, is that he thought that the master's program should change its name.
So it was Masters in Journalism down in NUI Galway.
And he said, you can't teach people to be journalists.
You can teach people to be reporters.
But they only become journalists over time when they have earned the respect of their listener or their reader or the viewer, whatever the case may be.
The lines are blurred somewhat these days.
And that's so true.
And I suppose that would be the main difference between a court report and a court correspondent is that experience.
And I would like to think in the way that I have managed cases and handled cases over the years has been, you know, for starters, balanced, fair, impartial during a live trial.
And even though I'm a human being, I have opinions.
I have a sense of what way a case is going.
I won't share those on air for obvious reasons.
And then after the fact that you have that experience, you have that education in terms of my legal studies, where you can offer something a little bit different.
You can be opinionated.
The shackles are off.
And it's also really important not to lose sight of kind of a common thread through this conversation has been the humanity of it all.
The realization that...
There are real people still suffering that will always suffer as a result of this case.
And it's just so important that you don't sensationalize that or you don't lose sight of that.
