So you would have four or five hours of evidence, but there's a lot happening either side of that.
And the reason that a jury will only sit for four or five hours listening to evidence is, and we touched on it a moment ago, is because it requires a huge amount of focus to follow that.
And it would be unsafe for a jury to sit through eight to 10 hours of that every day.
The really exciting part of my job then, I suppose, is like,
on a day when a verdict comes in.
And those are the days that really stand out for me.
Those are the days that I still get butterflies in my belly all these years later is that like when a jury goes out, there is such a vacuum in terms of activity.
Like, you know, it's been so busy throughout a trial and then all of a sudden it's
nothing.
And you're just waiting for that white smoke.
You don't know when a jury comes back.
And then there's the knock on the door and word filters through the divergent is, and then I could be on air within minutes, you know, talking about my, and that's, that's really when you have an opportunity to inject a lot of color, a lot of life, a lot of humanity into proceedings.
Like,
describing and helping the listener and taking them into that courtroom with you and telling them, this is what I heard and saw.
Whereas day-to-day reportage is, this is what we said.
This is what is alleged.
Yeah.
Well, it reminds me of, when you ask the question, it reminds me of some really good advice that I got from a former lecturer of mine, John Cunningham, who has since passed away.
When I was studying down in Galway, he was editor of Connacht Tribune and a brilliant journalist, but he was a real old school hack.
He had his little black contact book and his catchphrase was always, just write the damn thing.
