At the outset, as I say, he pleaded guilty to five counts of indecent assault.
He contested the rest and throughout the trial the court heard harrowing details about how he groomed and abused those girls.
There was evidence of inappropriate touching, kissing and far worse that I can't go into in any great detail on air.
The girls were aged between 8 and 15 and
when he abused them and again as I say the allegations go back to the 1970s and 1980s so this was a long long wait for them and possibly a day they feared they would never see but justice had finally caught up with them.
Yeah, that's a very good point.
For those who don't know, George Gibney is, as I say, a former swimming coach for Ireland's national and Olympic teams.
He began his career back in 1960 as a swimming coach.
He led two Irish swimming teams to Olympic Games in LA in 1984 and Seoul then in 1988.
And back in the 1990s, as you say, he was charged with 27 counts of indecency and carnal knowledge of children.
Now, those allegations are entirely separate to these proceedings, but those charges were never heard because his barrister successfully argued that George Gibney couldn't defend himself at trial because the allegations went back so far.
Some of them went back to the 1960s.
Now, that didn't make a whole lot of sense because while some of them did go back that far, some allegations were also from the 1980s, which would have been at the time just over a decade earlier.
He also made the argument that the allegations lacked detail, they weren't specific enough for criminal proceedings.
And after all those arguments were made, the court ruled that his right to a fair trial would be infringed if the prosecution continued.
So the Director of Public Prosecution couldn't pursue those charges and the state didn't appeal.
Now, I should say the law has thankfully changed in relation to that.
And if somebody tried to make a similar argument for the courts today, it would fall on deaf ears.
But as we now know, he then left Ireland for Scotland, ultimately ended up in the US.
