He lived there for decades leading up to his arrest.
As you say, he did hold similar positions with various swimming clubs outside of Ireland during his time away from this country.
And according to court papers that I've seen, these are papers that were presented during his extradition hearing, he has been living in the US since 1995.
And as I understand it, state authorities previously sought his cooperation with this investigation and consent.
They wanted him to consent to a voluntary interview.
That was done through an Interpol request.
In June 2021, a special agent with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement met and spoke with George Gibney, who ultimately refused to engage with Ngartha Síochána, declined to consent to that voluntary interview.
But those who sought to bring him home, to bring him to justice, they didn't give up.
It may have taken much longer than they would have hoped, but he was eventually tracked down and eventually brought home to face the music.
He was, and he does need the assistance of a wheelchair to get around.
He was pushed into the courtroom by one of the prison officers just after three o'clock this afternoon when word filtered out, I suppose, that verdicts were imminent.
And I noticed before the jury came back, he gingerly made his way into the dock, getting up off his seat in the wheelchair and sitting into the dock with his back to the public gallery, away from the survivors of his abuse, those now grown women that he abused when they were just little girls.
The jury then returned a few minutes later and it took some time for the verdicts to be delivered and that's due to the sheer amount of the counts on the indictment.
They had to go through each and every one of them.
And the most serious offence, the attempted rape of one of the girls, that was the final count on the indictment and they did take them in order.
So the survivor of that attack had to wait right until the end and there were very emotional scenes in court when the jury's work was finally done.
He sat there largely impassive from what I could see.
There were sobs from the public gallery as the verdicts were being delivered but a huge display of emotion behind us on the press bench when he finally, when they finally got through all of those charges.
Three of the survivors from, as far as I could tell, were in court today.
One of them lives abroad, wasn't there.
