And I suppose one of the things, aside from the brutality of what they did to Anna Creagel and the harrowing evidence that was heard during that trial,
It was the fact that, and I know juries aren't concerned with motives when it comes to deciding on a person's guilt or otherwise, but as far as I can see, and we still don't know to this day why they killed Anna Creagel, only they know that for sure, but it seems on the evidence that the only reason they did was out of a desire to kill somebody.
And...
Anna Creagel just found herself being the really unlucky targets that they set their sights on.
And again, let's not forget that they were 13 years of age at the time.
And it's that that I just really struggled to get my head around.
Like for the most part, when you're covering trials,
Not that you could ever justify taking another person's life, but the motives are generally love, greed, money, revenge, whatnot.
For these children, it was simply, it seems, that they wanted to kill somebody.
And that was just a frightening thing to be going into that case day in, day out.
to watch her lovely parents, Geraldine and Patrick, the late Patrick Riegel, he's since passed away, to watch them sitting through that harrowing evidence was so difficult.
And one thing that always sticks out in my mind was when they were arraigned.
So when the charges were first put to them, because you don't, for the most part, like you don't really hear from an accused person.
They don't have to put up a defence as such.
It's up to the prosecution to prove its case.
More often than not, accused persons don't get in the dock and give evidence, exposing themselves to cross-examination.
So one of the first and one of the only times that you heard their voices was when they were asked, when the charges were put to them in front of the jury and they pleaded not guilty.
And just hearing their young voices, you know, the voices of two very young boys was so jarring for me.
I remember when they were convicted and Geraldine and Patrick came out and they gave such a glowing tribute to their daughter, not just in their comments to the media after the convictions, but also through their evidence.
Like more often than not, and you know this better than most, is that when it comes to a criminal trial, it's often one dimensional.
