You don't often get a really good sense of the victim.

The victim is almost a piece of evidence in the prosecution's case.

You don't hear about what their life was like.

You don't hear about their personality, the type of person they were, their dreams, their aspirations.

You don't hear any of that stuff until after the fact.

And that can be really difficult for family members when a trial is live.

But we did in this particular case, and it's again one of the reasons that it stands out for me, is that Jolene in particular, through her evidence, she shared these intimate moments that she had with her daughter as she grew up.

And you really got a sense that she was this beautiful, vibrant, smart, funny.

It was absolutely tragic.

And like, I understand why juries don't concern themselves and legal teams don't concern themselves with painting a kind of an all-rounded picture of a victim because jurors aren't concerned with that.

In fact, they're told to leave sympathy at the door.

They're only concerned with what happened to a person and who was responsible.

So I understand all that.

But I do remember Geraldine and Patrick as they were leaving the courthouse once everything was done.

And I do remember as I was going back in to continue working and filing for the news desk, I remember just looking back once as they were leaving the courthouse and just seeing them walking off into the distance and just thinking to myself, OK, this was obviously a difficult process for me and my colleagues to sit through that harrowing evidence day in, day out.

But imagine what it was like for them.

you know, like whatever about me, that's my job.

If I don't like it, I get another job.

For them, walking away, having sat through that nightmare, not just the trial, you know, for years and forever haunted by it, I just felt this is never going to leave them.

They can't leave it at the door in the same way that I can try and do when I leave.
