No, it's not what it's about at all.
It's about being able to effectively disagree because the reason we launched this whole center is not to teach people manners or protocol or manners.
etiquette or anything like that it's because our democracy only functions when we can have constructive disagreement and this is something that uh you mentioned uh people in their in their different bubbles and all it goes all the way back george washington in his farewell address his warning to america was don't devolve into factions where you put the factions interest above the the nation's interest and that was a concern he had and we're seeing a lot of that now
Well, I'd say social media is one of the biggest challenges to civility today.
And we have an entire chapter in the book about social media.
But the problem is, you mentioned the Civil War and all of our differences in the past.
It's kind of human instinct to move past things, to come back together.
Time heals all wounds.
But social media is a roadblock to that.
It blocks the off ramps.
Instead of, if you imagine you have a disagreement with a friend and pretty soon you want to move past it and you're ready to, but social media is like someone whispering in your ear constantly saying, no, they're bad.
They're worse than you think they are.
They're a terrible human being.
Don't think about trying to make up with them.
And the outrage is the oxygen on social media.
People, it feeds you.
The goal of any social media platform, and we spent a lot of time on this, the goal is to keep you on that platform.
So if you're looking at pictures of puppies, it's going to send you more puppy pictures.
If you're looking at cars, it's going to send you that.
If you're in political conversations, it's going to keep upping the outrage to keep you on.
