And since it was going to be so close that she was going to be leaving, she wanted to come over and give me a hug. And I was getting ready to go someplace that night with her father. So I invited her in and I brought her back into my bathroom because I was getting ready. And she sat there on the closed lid toilet. And we talked and we visited.
And it was just very unusual for her to show up at my front door unannounced or without her father picking her up.
I have remembered that often. She knew she was going to Hawaii soon and she wanted to say goodbye.
They had gone for a picnic.
And they went to the windward side of the island. And as it turns out, there were posters all over that beach marked, do not enter the water, no swimming.
But Devereux and Sandra went out holding hands, singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow, which was Devereux's favorite song from Wizard of Oz.
See, we'd gotten the phone call at one o'clock in the morning. I answered the phone and she asked for Chuck. And I said, who's calling? And she said, Terry Hoffman.
He wouldn't let me go with him.
Thank God had not been mutilated or eaten or anything like that because, oh my gosh, there's nothing worse than having your child missing and not knowing what in the world has happened to them. But she was found on the beach.
He said it was like the old Sandra when he was in that hospital room with her alone. And she was grieving and just kept saying over and over again, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.
I'll never, yeah, I remember that. He said it was like a curtain came over her. She became a different person.
He brought her back home to Dallas. And I guess it was on the same airplane as Sandra and Terry.
I will be shocked if there are not more deaths than we know of.
