My grandma, when she was born on a farm in the 1930s, was not granted a birth certificate.

So there is no original document about her name, Maddie Pearl Jackson.

My grandma got married in her uncle's living room when she was 17.

She was married by a pastor, but nobody was there to give her a marriage license to document that change of her name.

But when my grandma got to Detroit,

As a grown woman, an 18 year old, she voted in every single election since.

And so for her to have to now all of a sudden prove to a president that probably doesn't want her to vote anyway because she would vote against her.

Who she is and that she's a voter to come up with the more than $300.

to somehow get the state of Alabama to generate these documents for her, that is only a mechanism for making it more difficult for this consistent voter, this black woman to cast her ballot.

It's uncalled for, and it's not solving a real problem.

The problem is it is too difficult and inaccessible for voters in rural communities to be able to cast ballots or to find a drop box to drop their ballot into.

That's the problem.

But instead, again, as you alluded to, they're just trying to erect more barriers to make it more difficult for more people and more types of people in more communities to cast their ballot with confidence.

That's why that act cannot pass the full Congress.

It should not pass the full Congress.

And we need to get, frankly, enough Democrats in Congress to make sure that never sees the light of day.

So this is, I see it as an act of intimidation of the people who do the frontline work of our democracy every single day and every single year and every single election season.

In the city of Detroit, where I live, where I vote, Trump has deployed these election monitors.
