The Union Army, like they had done before, it's not going to go as well this time.
But, you know, stakes are high, panics are high, and it's the North is increasingly, the political establishment, losing confidence in the Union commander, the Northern commander, Joe Hooker, who just got beaten, you know, at the Battle of Chancellorsville.
So they're looking for new leadership while all this is unfolding.
Yes, what a big day.
You know, June 28th is the day they replace Joe Hooker with George Gordon Meade.
Lee is spread out all over Pennsylvania, like going from, you know, past York, Pennsylvania to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, up near Harrisburg.
And that's where the Susquehanna really is.
He doesn't quite get to the Pennsylvania capital.
So it's pretty intense here.
But this is the important part, okay?
When Lee learns, as you said, that Meade is coming, Lee decides to concentrate his army from Pennsylvania.
the York, Chambersburg and Harrisburg areas.
And the roads will bring you to only one place when you concentrate from those three places.
It makes perfect sense why they ended up there.
In the meantime, you have a strange situation, the Northern Army catching up, the Northern Army coming from the South and the Southern Army coming from the North as it concentrates.
And that's when they start meeting North and West of Gettysburg, a small farming community, 2,400 people, but it's on the rise.
Gaslighting, six churches, three banks, the railroads come to town.
It's an up and coming place.
So first of all, you should know that on June 26th, on the way to York, Pennsylvania, some Confederates kind of came through town.
So the Pennsylvanians got – the Gettysburgians or Gettysburgers got their first taste of it as the Confederates ransomed the town, didn't destroy the place but got some stuff and then moved on.
