And I'll say, first question, I don't believe there's a wrong or right.
Does it work for you?
Does it work for your child?
Now, if you tell me it works for you and it feels good, or maybe sometimes you'd rather be out watching Netflix, but it works okay.
I'm like, sounds beautiful.
How good?
You'll never regret it.
If I ask that same question, a parent says, it is doing my head in.
It is putting pressure on my marriage.
It ends in a meltdown every night.
Then there is no planet on which I still think it's a good idea to keep lying with your child in a way that's keeping you all up and making you all lose it every night.
I'm like, yeah, it sounds like we need to kind of set a boundary there.
And I think there are four core rules we all should have in our own.
So no hitting, hurting ourselves, the dog, each other.
including, you know, and then no damage to our environment, our house, our property, and how you frame that in your house is going to look different to mine.
Number three is no name calling because there's a lot of evidence that allowing kids to call each other, even silly names like weirdo is not great long-term if we don't intervene.
So I love that as a core rule.
And number four, I really love for all families and it's when someone's crying, when someone's saying stop, when someone looks uncomfortable, we stop and we check if they're okay.
I don't make my kids apologise, but I do make them check in on each other when someone is not okay.
Now, you don't have to have done the thing to them to check on someone.
