This is the one that people tend to find a bit odd, but we do it automatically.
You can rotate the whole ankle inwards and then you can rotate it outwards as well.
That tends to be a stiffer one on people.
then on top of that, if our foot is flat on the floor, you can rotate your foot so you can kind of turn the arch of the foot down and you can lift it.
So pronation supination.
In the same way as for your hand, you can flex it down, you can flex it up, you can rotate it.

So the sentence I always say to people is the body is a chain.
Nothing works or exists on its own.
So where we might look at an ankle or a foot injury, we've got to look upwards because it is loaded by the rest of the body.
It is loaded by the knee, by the hip.
So we do have to consider what everything above it is doing.
I'd say the function of the ankle is to transmit force.
So we most commonly use it either if we're standing or we're walking.
So that transmission of we strike our heel forward and we press through and that sends force up through the knee, up through the thigh to the hip and like propels us forwards.
It also plays a key role in balance, I would say.
So this is where it gets a bit more complex.
But I think the best way to think about it is in terms of direction around the ankle.
So if you think we've got the outer ankle, we've got the front, the side and the back.
