The Bronze Age is beginning.
And this is when a passing bird will have dropped a seed.
that somehow found its way into the ground in just such a way that allowed it to grow.
Imagine this seed fluttering to the ground and resting on the damp earth.
Imagine a creature passing by.
Perhaps a raccoon scrabbling at the earth as it goes and flicking some over the top of the seed.
See that seed burrowing down into the ground?
Safer and safer the deeper it goes.
Until at last it comes to rest wrapped in soft warmth and darkness.
And now the seed must wait, patiently, not knowing what is to come or what it should do.
But somehow when the sun rises higher in the sky,
And the rains fall.
The seed knows its purpose in the world.
A small green shoot appears and knows which way to grow to reach the top, to head towards the sky, breaking through the rough ground as the slimmest, brightest flash of green.
And as the spring gives way to summer, the seedling grows taller.
reaching perhaps a meter.
Before autumn arrives, and it sets about hibernating for a while.
stalling its growth during the cold winter months, and waiting once more for the warmth of spring.
Methusela is a bristle cone pine, one of the slowest growing trees in the world.
Their slow growth means the wood is densely packed.
