But it meant that I got to do Northern Ireland at the World Cup because in the second group stage they were playing Austria and then France, I think it was, put them out.
But
My memory, we were talking about Scotland.
The fans seemed to have got their heads around the fact that there was potentially another glorious failure coming up because their song, the fan song at the time was, I'm taking my lager to my laga.
because they were based in the south of Spain.
And I was assigned, working with Radio 2 BBC at the time, I was assigned to Scotland for the first group stage.
And there's a nice story about that, if I may digress, because the deal was that...
You stayed with your team until they got knocked out and then you went home.
So I was given Scotland to cover and my colleague Alan Green, who was only recently in Radio 2 Sport from Belfast, he was given Northern Ireland.
But I was the guy in London.
He was the guy from Manchester.
I was in head office.
So when it came to the bit and Scotland got knocked out, I was assuming I'd go home.
And my wife was staying at Alan Green's house with his wife.
And the word came through from London, Alan would have been staying on because Northern Ireland qualified.
Word came through from London that I was to stay on and move to Northern Ireland.
And Alan, as the junior partner, was being sent home.
Which, of course, didn't only have ramifications for my relationship with Alan because he was convinced that I had done this.
