And the word came through from London, Alan would have been staying on because Northern Ireland qualified.
Word came through from London that I was to stay on and move to Northern Ireland.
And Alan, as the junior partner, was being sent home.
Which, of course, didn't only have ramifications for my relationship with Alan because he was convinced that I had done this.
But it also put my wife in a very strange position in Manchester with Brenda, Alan's wife.
She had a kind of extravagance.
Before Alan came home with smoke coming out of his ear.
So anyway, that was that.
But Scotland, as I say, set up for another glorious failure.
And we were based down in San Roque.
I was working with Frank McClintock, the great Arsenal double winning captain, who became a great friend because I did a lot of matches with him for BBC Radio.
And we went, Scotland again were up against it.
They're playing Brazil.
And the match was in Seville.
So we had a long car drive from where we were staying in San Roque, Guadalcorte, near Gibraltar, up to Seville for the match.
And the match took place in the Real Betis Stadium.
And believe it or not, Scotland took the lead.
They had a midfielder called David Neri who played for...
for Dundee United, who had been European Cup semi-finalists the year Liverpool won it.
They got knocked out by Roma.
