I am an author and a playwright and a former actor.
And I spent about 20 years making theatre and acting in Australia and in England and have been writing plays for the last 10 years and wrote my debut novel this year called Soft Serve, which came out in Feb.
SoftServe is about three 20-somethings and their dead friend's mum.
And they are all stuck in a regional McDonald's as bushfires close in.
And it's an exploration of friendship and loss and grief and a little queer story that runs through it.
And, you know, a bunch of people wanting something else somewhere else.
I would like to begin with Cloud Street by Tim Winton.
It's a story set in Western Australia, beginning as the Second World War comes to a close.
And it's about two families, the Pickles and the Lambs.
And yes, that sounds like a pub lunch, as they say in the book.
And both families suffer a separate tragedy.
Sam Pickles loses his hand in a winch while at work, and the Lambs' son, Fish...
nearly drowned one evening, leaving him with a brain injury.
And as a result of these two traumas, these two families find themselves coming together and moving into a big breathing ramshackle house at number one Cloud Street.
And what follows is, you know, a story of people stamping and laughing and singing and shouting directly in life's face is what it feels like.
And
Everyone's just trying to be happy and do good and live a prosperous life.
And it kind of shows us that life is one big old gamble.
And, you know, it's all dependent on the shifty shadow of lady luck.
