I came to read this book because I saw the play of it first.
And in 1998, Sydney Festival put on a production of this play with Belvoir and with Black Swan.
And they did a site-specific version of it down on the wharves.
So on Sydney Harbour.
And what was so stunning about this production was at the end of this play and all through the play we hear that Fish Lamb just wants to be back in the water.
And at the end of the play, Dan Wiley, the actor playing Fish, ran down the end of the jetty and jumped off the jetty into the harbour.
And it was one of the most breathtaking moments that kind of only theatre can produce and
seeing this character so fully achieve their objective in front of an audience's eyes and these gasps and everything.
And so I was like, what is this thing?
What is this amazing story?
And then I read the book.
How old were you?
I would have been about 25.
when I saw the play.
And then a couple of years later, I had an English teacher who taught me, you know, how to read a book basically through The Quiet American by Graham Greene.
And then I read this book after that.
And so it was the first book I feel like I read as a teenager who was 15, 16.
and really knew how to read a book.
You know, people say things that they don't mean.
And it was just like a thrilling thing to read this book about Australia that is just so broad in what it tries to bring in.
