It's a book about a house, but underneath it, it's a book about this tension between a sense of
home and also its opposite.
You know, there's a line in, I think, where Dolly says that all night, all day, people seem to be going someplace else.
You know, everyone wants to be somewhere else.
And it gives this sense, I think, that like Australia opened up a bit during the First World War and there was this sense of something else out there that wasn't what we were used to.
And there's this restlessness in it that I just find so appealing.
I think that I had this sense that, you know, a book needs to have this hero and we follow this hero through this journey.
And this is a true ensemble piece, this book.
And so you can just take something from all of these different characters and it feels unusual in that way that it –
You know, there's these characters that want something so deeply, but then they act against those impulses and they go in the opposite.
And Winton does this incredible thing because this idea of the shifty shadow of luck that is so present in this book.
There's this amazing tension device that as soon as something really good happens, you know that lurking around the corner, someone's about to be disappointed.
And so it just pulls you through this story in that way.
It informed so much of it because there's so many moments through the book that are deeply theatrical.
There's almost a bit of a kind of magic realism to it.
And so having seen this book interpreted so theatrically on stage with boats and stars and all of these things, it really expanded what a book could be to me as a reader and as a writer as well.
it gives us this amazing sense of these two halves, you know, there's these two completely different families that are perhaps more different than they think that they are.
And there's a fence running down the middle, you know, and that sort of,
feels like what we're living in now as well, that there's these fences everywhere that are separating everybody in our country, in Australia.
And, you know, this book is about how we tear down those fences ultimately.
